In 2021, Guinea-Bissau's annual estimated postharvest losses were 12,078 tonnes for rice, 3,767 tonnes for sorghum, 1,689 tonnes for millet, 2,150 tonnes for maize. The highest and lowest estimated postharvest loss percentages are 18.0% for maize and 11.2% for millet.
Within the value chain, for all crops the majority of loss is estimated to be happening at harvesting/field drying. Within Guinea-Bissau, the highest postharvest losses in tonnes occur for rice in Oio, for sorghum in Gabú, for millet in Gabú, for maize in Oio. Regarding the nutritional losses, the estimated rice grain lost postharvest could have met the annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements of 50,220 people.
