Burundi's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for millet ranged from 408 tonnes in 2013 to 1,332 tonnes in 2009. The estimated loss percentages have been unchanged over time at 11.2%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest millet loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Burundi, on average the highest quantity of millet production occurs in Rutana. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated millet lost postharvest ranged from 1,799 people in 2013 to 5,868 people in 2010.
