Togo's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for maize ranged from 110,333 tonnes in 2001 to 264,957 tonnes in 2012. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 18.0% and 30.7%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2012 with a value of over 119 million USD, equivalent to 7.3% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest maize loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Togo, on average the highest quantity of maize production occurs in Plateaux. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated maize lost postharvest ranged from 456,458 people in 2001 to 1,096,152 people in 2012.
