Nigeria's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for maize ranged from 819,676 tonnes in 2001 to 2,234,843 tonnes in 2021. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 17.3% and 18.2%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2021 with a value of over 1 billion USD.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest maize loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Nigeria, on average the highest quantity of maize production occurs in Kaduna. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated maize lost postharvest ranged from 3,441,409 people in 2001 to 9,382,979 people in 2021.
