Ghana's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for maize ranged from 168,347 tonnes in 2001 to 414,426 tonnes in 2018. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 17.9% and 18.0%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2012 with a value of over 200 million USD, equivalent to 2.2% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest maize loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Ghana, on average the highest quantity of maize production occurs in Brong Ahafo. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated maize lost postharvest ranged from 687,752 people in 2001 to 1,693,066 people in 2018.
