Ethiopia's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for maize ranged from 657,920 tonnes in 2005 to 1,873,801 tonnes in 2018. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 16.3% and 20.0%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2017 with a value of over 502 million USD, equivalent to 1.8% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest maize loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Ethiopia, on average the highest quantity of maize production occurs in Oromia. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated maize lost postharvest ranged from 2,802,681 people in 2005 to 7,982,227 people in 2018.
