In 2021, Burundi's annual estimated postharvest losses were 29,214 tonnes for maize, 12,601 tonnes for rice, 9,301 tonnes for sorghum, 1,738 tonnes for wheat. The highest and lowest estimated postharvest loss percentages are 18.0% for maize and 11.2% for millet.
Within the value chain the majority of loss is estimated to be happening at harvesting/field drying for maize, at harvesting/field drying for rice, at harvesting/field drying for sorghum, at household-level storage for wheat. Within Burundi, the highest postharvest losses in tonnes occur for maize in Bururi, for rice in Bubanza, for sorghum in Kirundo, for wheat in Bururi. Regarding the nutritional losses, the estimated maize grain lost postharvest could have met the annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements of 129,051 people.
