Senegal's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 10,585 tonnes in 2014 to 43,730 tonnes in 2021. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 11.2% and 18.4%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2021 with a value of over 16 million USD.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Senegal, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Tambacounda. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 43,693 people in 2014 to 180,513 people in 2021.
